Slaton Student Exhibits Champion in Mile High City

Slaton ISD students made an impressive showing at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, a premier livestock event that draws the nation’s top junior exhibitors. This year’s swine competition featured more than 500 junior market hog entries from across the U.S., with youth aged 9–18 showing off their best market hogs on a national stage.
Canton Overstreet brought home 1st Place in the Lightweight Poland China division, and his barrow earned the prestigious title of Breed Champion.
Grant Schilling placed 2nd with his Heavyweight Crossbred barrow.
Cooper Overstreet capped off the day with a 6th place finish in the Heavyweight Yorkshire division, rounding out a solid performance for the crew.
The excitement doesn’t stop in the show ring! Canton’s Breed Champion barrow has qualified for the Friday Sale of Champions, where top animals from the show will be auctioned before buyers from across the country. This prestigious sale not only highlights the quality of the livestock but also gives young exhibitors the chance to earn premium bids that help support their future projects and interests in agriculture.
The National Western Stock Show’s junior livestock competition is known as one of the most competitive junior events in the nation, with hundreds of exhibitors and hundreds of market hogs vying for top honors each year. Success here is something Slaton ISD students — and their supporters — can be truly proud of.
