Cathelene Thomas Elementary serves 525 students in 1-5. Student's in grades 1-5 receive an extra class in math daily with an emphasis on manipulatives, math concepts, vocabulary, tested objectives, and practice. Reading classes are staggered at different times to permit 90 minutes of grouped instruction to better meet individual student needs. Technology access is available in each classroom, in the well-equipped library, and in the school’s three computer labs. Computer- assisted instruction supplements instruction, utilizing Plato Reading and Mathematics, Orchard Learning Systems Science, Reading, and Math, Read Naturally, Fast Math, and SRA Technology Applications. Saxon Phonics and Lone Star Math supplement the school’s language arts and mathematics programs. Student's are encouraged to practice reading in the Reading Counts program. The school offers full day prekindergarten and kindergarten. The art program receives recognition from throughout the region. The campus received an Exemplary rating by the Texas Education Agency in six of the last nine years and a Recognized rating in the other three years. The performance of all of its students resulted in the designation of the school as a Title I Distinguished Campus. The school is implementing a new curriculum effort--C Scope-- in preparation for the new state assessments that are to be implemented in 2011-2012. Its mission is to "create a safe, secure place to learn citizenship skills while excelling in academics."
