Pep Rally
by Leslie Robinson
“We got spirit, yes we do! We got spirit, how about you!” Welcome to the Stephen F. Austin Intermediate School gym where students greet the SHS Tiger athletes with a chorus of cheers. The Tigers as they run down rows of red and black clad students waiving “high fives” and then busting through a banner as the gym erupts in a loud cheer. Our Friday mornings are never quiet as students begin their game day with a fun filled pep rally. This opportunity allows them to show their support for Slaton High School’s athletes. It is a bonding experience like no other, the Slaton High School Tigers join us for cheer competitions and more.
SFA students each week get to challenge the Tigers in various activities. One week it is a hula-hoop war, next time it’s a Quick-Fire Math Challenge. You might see a Tigers in piggy-back races, playing musical hula-hoops or dragging sleeping bags across the gym with someone on it. You never know what they may be doing or who is going to win. To spice up the competition our teachers and coaches join in to try their skills with a hula-hoop or a math problem. Sometimes, they are pretty good! Our students also get involved in shaping the pep rallies by designing the posters and banners that get displayed each week in the gym. This year’s Homecoming included a parade with floats from each grade within the district. Both our 4th and 5th grade floats held places of honor during the high school pep rally. We all look forward to our pep rallies each week. We plant school spirit in our students early. Our commitment to nurture them continues each year. Our goal is the growth and success of our students and Slaton Independent School District.
