3rd Graders

Our 3rd graders at Cathelene Thomas Elementary have had a great start to their last year at CTE! We love learning academics in class but we also love the excitement of attending pep rallies, performing at PTO programs, and going on field trips.

We attend Pep Rallies to support our Varsity Slaton Tiger Football Team and we have a great number of our students who are “Little Tigers”. CTE has also brought home the coveted Spirit Stick!

Our 3rd graders did a fantastic job performing their dances in our first PTO program! Coach Weeks did a wonderful job teaching the dance steps in a few short weeks, and the program was such a success they performed again for those who were not able to attend!

Safety City was our first field trip and it was a great learning experience to end our unit on Safety. Our students learned firsthand how to ride a bicycle, and the steps it takes to be safe. They also learned pedestrian safety and were able to practice as well. We were all given safety materials and a license to prove we know what it takes to be safe. In practicing safety, our 3rd graders get to be in charge of Safety Patrol operating every morning from about 7:15- 8:00.

These students wear badges and guide our younger Thomas Tigers to where they need to be, and they help keep the halls safe and in control at all times. The Safety Patrol fits in great with the implementation of PBSI and helps kids remember what the signs say and the meaning of the symbols on our floors throughout the school.

Our second field trip was “Ag in the Bag”. Our students attended stations that connected their learning to what we have covered and will cover in both social studies and science. They learned about our agricultural community and measures we must take in order to keep our community running. We were fed lunch and snacks throughout the day which even included ICE CREAM!!

In December we will attend the Food Fair at the Civic Center. Our job will be to help decide which foods are suitable for our lunches in the cafeteria. We get to be an involved partner in the decision making process and the best part is—we get to sample any and everything we wish and then give them our input! What a fun and learning experience this will be for our kids---not to mention our teachers!

Finally, to insure that our kids get the most out of their day, we strive to keep our kids motivated with curriculum that insures success for both the TAKS test and for 4th grade. Mr. Thompson has implemented two great programs- TARGET Math and SAXON Phonics. He has also allowed us to level our kids for reading. This has proven every year to be successful and is evident in our scores on the TAKS test. He has also maintained our 3rd grade math lab position which is a key component to our successful math program. Our dedication to the curriculum is made evident with our exemplary rating for the past 5 years and by over 40% of last year’s third graders having made a commended performance score on both the reading and math TAKS tests.

When 3rd graders enter our grade level, they are prepared academically and are willing to learn more and do what it takes to make the most of their education! It’s great to be a 3rd grader at Cathelene Thomas Elementary!
