District Mission
Statement:
The mission of the Slaton
Independent School District is to graduate responsible citizens with a
world-class education able to compete globally by providing a variety of quality
learning experiences through integrating the agricultural, industrial,
historical, and unique diversity of our community.
Community Information:
Located 15 miles southeast
of Lubbock, the community of Slaton offers the best of two worlds: the comforts
and enjoyment of small town living and proximity to a major urban area only 20
minutes away. The community is a progressive town with more than 6,000 friendly
residents. Texas Tech University, Lubbock Christian University, Wayland Baptist
University and South Plains College provide ready access for those interested in
higher learning. Excellent medical facilities, shopping malls, and
international airport, and many cultural activities and opportunities are
available. Slaton is a community that cares about its schools and supports
students and teachers. There are many churches of all faiths located in Slaton,
demonstrating the high moral values of the citizenry. There are several
recreations facilities in the area. An active and aggressive Chamber of
Commerce sponsors citywide events and activities throughout the year. Many
civic organizations are active in the community. These qualities teamed with
warm, friendly, caring people make Slaton a great place to live, work, and raise
a family.
District Information:
Slaton citizens are very
proud of their schools. Established in 1912, the district has existed for 93
years delivering quality education to the young people in the area. Due to the
strong support and involvement of the Board of Trustees, district staff,
parents, and community, a positive climate exists for continuous improvement.
The district’s instructional program emphasizes alignment among the written,
taught and tested curriculum with high achievement expectations for all
students. Slaton is well known in the area for the historical success it enjoys
in all extracurricular activities at the 2A level.
Success is experienced at
all levels in academic competitions, athletics, and music activities. There
seems to be a good balance between the academic and extracurricular areas. A
focus on reading and math is the basis for the instructional program at the two
elementary campuses. Supplemental tutorials are continually provided for those
students who need extra support. Core curricular areas are emphasized at the
secondary campuses. Some of the programs and services include full-day
pre-kindergarten, community volunteer program, parenting center classes,
Character Counts program, positive behavior support program, active Student
Councils at the Junior High and High School campuses, accelerated reading and
math programs, quality art and music offerings, outstanding JROTC program, G/T
classes and activities at all campuses, multi-district cosmetology and auto
technology programs, a distance learning lab for interactive classes, foreign
language lab, and variety of AP and dual credit courses.
Improvement of technology
is an ongoing goal of the district. Continually upgrading and replacing
computers is paramount for today’s students. The Junior High School is a
control campus for the Technology Immersion Pilot (TIP) project in Texas with
hopes of becoming a TIP campus in the next round of grant awards. The two
elementary campuses and the high school campus focus on lab-based technology
programs.
The district passed a bond
election in August 2002 and have recently completed major facility upgrades,
including a new gymnasium and cafeteria at the high school, field house, science
lab at Stephen F. Austin, renovation of a building for a central administration
office, and office improvements at three campuses. Buildings are maintained in
an excellent fashion and are extremely clean, neat and attractive. The
Transportation Department operates six bus routes in the district, including a
city route and a special education route. Food service boasts an eye-catching
and cheerful cafeteria at each campus.
The district has a
competent and caring staff as one of its strongest assets. The high goal of
seeking and keeping quality and effective teachers is evident by the high
retention rate. One who visits this district can easily see “people making a
difference.”
